He first began to spin together musical hooks and rhymes as a teenager, inspired by his early musical icons, legends like Kanye West, Jay Z, Michael Jackson, and Outkast, and in the process would ultimately discover his own artist persona as Jinx Universe.

The last decade has seen Jinx blossom into his own as a rapper. His long-time collaboration with the prolific LA-based producer duo Likeminds, has landed Jinx many high profile accolades, including commercial syncs, film and video-game scores, and live opening-slots for Wiz Khalifa, J Cole, and Tech N9ne, among others. Yet building himself into the artist he is today hasn’t always been easy. For years, Jinx has been balancing musical creation with raising his family in Spokane WA, and hustling night jobs to support his kids. Full of self-encouragement born from overcoming these adversities, the tracks on his newest album Make It Look Good, bubble forth from a deep well-spring of positive affirmation. “Look at yourself in the mirror and tell yourself that you are great. You’ve got to believe it first to make it real,” he insists.

Make It Look Good once again sees the emcee collaborating with Likeminds. This pop-heavy tour de force features gospel-tinged beats interwoven with electronic dance music, and is suffused with Jinx’s characteristic, unflagging optimism. “This record is for the dreamers,” says Jinx. “That’s everybody. Most of us are out here just trying to figure this life thing out. I hope this record becomes part of your soundtrack.”
Jinx never fails to crank up the party on each track. “Get up, get up/ Get down/ The time’s right now” he raps on the gospel-inflected “Get Up,” a number destined to be the morning routine hype-up song for many a fan. Title-track “Make It Look Good,” a charmingly cocky affair, opens with a bluesy acoustic guitar riff while the drawling first verse kicks off, “I’m a man crush Monday/ Swag lord on Sunday,” building into the irresistible call to love yourself for who you are on the chorus, “I make it look good!” The song “Find Our Way” takes a more introspective turn, as Jinx muses on a touching sadness that he sometimes feels, “Floating in the deep/ I don’t get a peep of good sleep sometimes.” Yet Jinx once again counters with an anthem of hope on the chorus, “Sun is out/ Brand new day/ …I know/ We’ll find a way.”

Jinx Universe has a rare gift for instantly lifting a listener’s mood, and audiences will love the energy of Make It Look Good. The album looks out through life’s open window, ignoring those seemingly closed doors, and sees a world full of promise and joy. [ less ]
