The quintessential “sleepover” has always been a naughty and rebellious activity. High schoolers during a sleepover tap into an excitable, often nefarious, energy whenever they stay up late with their best friends while the host’s parents are asleep. These slumber party antics, pranks, and deep conversations in dark rooms often become childhood memories that last a lifetime. Enter Sleepover, the newest musical project by two rising Los Angeles-based songwriters: Greg Hvnsen and Evalyn. The two each have their own flourishing solo songwriting careers—Greg has worked with Fleetwood Mac, Surfer Blood, and Giorgio Morodor, among others while Evalyn has written with Finneas O’Connell (of Billie Eilish), Louis The Child, Icona Pop, and more. So it’s no surprise that when the two artists linked-up and found out they both share a love for bass punk music, the results were authentic and palpable. Enter Sleepover, the newest musical project by two rising Los Angeles-based songwriters: Greg Hvnsen and Evalyn. Sleepover’s debut EP is a beautiful rollercoaster of gritty lo-fi shoegaze guitar riffs, seductive distorted vocals, and banging percussion all wrapped up into an intoxicating punk bravado. It’s the perfect soundtrack to sneaking out of the house at night, an intense makeout, a rowdy night out dancing, or even tripping out at a Joshua Tree campout. It’s sexy, mischievous, confident, and brash music that gets you so amped-up and dizzy that there is no other choice but to buckle up for an unforgettable sonic journey.

Sleepover also has a raw DIY vibe that simply can’t be ignored. This is music that’s made to be heard in a garage with the speakers red-lining until the neighbors complain. Greg and Evalyn actually performed a private show in a friend’s backyard which became an “a ha!” moment for the band.

“Our first show was in a friend’s backyard in Venice where again we yelled bullshit into a microphone and danced around with a bunch of friends over cheap beer and cigarettes and that’s the general vibe of the project,” Evalyn says. “We’re tapping into the music that really made us feel something growing up. Letting ourselves make something simply for the adrenaline of it.” [ less ]
